No. 7 Huskies Down No. 6 Vanderbilt To Advance To National Team Indoor Semifinals

MADISON, Wis. - Junior Dea Sumantri's win at No. 1 singles clinched the 4-3 team victory for Washington over Vanderbilt, leading the Huskies to tomorrow's semifinal match at the USTA/ITA National Women's Tennis Team Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin, Friday.
Fifth-seeded Washington (5-0), advancing the National Team Indoor semifinals for the first time in school history, will take on No. 1 seed Stanford, Saturday, at 1 p.m. PT.
No. 29 Sumantri came back from a first-set loss, to pull an upset over No. 39 Audra Falk at No. 1 singles, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-2. Sumantri also had a hand in another big upset, pairing with senior Claire Carter in doubles to defeat the No. 2 team in the nation, Kelly Schmandt and Aleke Tsoubanos, 8-5.
The Huskies opened the match by winning the doubles point, thanks to a victory at No. 3 by the UW duo sophomore Dinka Hadzic and freshman Saskia Nauenberg over Amanda Fish and Ashley Schellhas, also by the score of 8-5. Washington then jumped out to a 3-1 lead, riding singles wins from Carter at No. 2 and junior Mugette Ahn at No. 6.
Vanderbilt posted a comeback with wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, before Sumantri posted the match-clinching upset over Falk.
Washington improves its overall mark at the Team Indoors to 5-3, having also competed in 2001 and 2002. The USTA/ITA Team Indoor Championships continues through Sunday at the University of Wisconsin.
