No. 18 Huskies Fall Short of Ducks, 4-3

EUGENE, Oregon - For the second day in a row, the difference for Washington men's tennis came down to one point, as they battled against Oregon in a non-conference match-up, today at the Student Tennis Center. The point that proved to be the deciding factor for the 18th-ranked Huskies (8-4) in the loss to the Ducks came down to the tie breaker between UW's Alex Vlaski and Oregon's Manuel Kost, in the No. 1 singles position.
Oregon took the early lead in the duel, winning the doubles point. The Huskies No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams were both defeated. UW's 45th-ranked pair, Vlaski and freshmen Alex Slovic, were defeated 8-4 by UO's Kost and Thomas Bieri. Christoph Palmanshofer and Peter Scharler, in No. 2 position, fell 8-4 to Sven Swinnen and Arron Spencer. Freshman Daniel Chu and senior Nick Weiss defeated Chris King and Markus Schiller of Oregon, 8-3.
Junior All-American Vlaski won the first set 7-5. Kost came back to win the next two, to cause the upset. Vlaski, the nation's third-ranked player, picked up his fourth loss of the year, making his overall record 15-4. UW's Slovic was defeated in the No. 2 singles position. The young Yugoslavian, ranked 80th, lost his first duel match as a Husky, falling to Oregon's 92nd ranked Swinnen, 2-6, 6-3, 3-6. His over-all record is now 18-3 in singles competition.
Washington junior Peter Scharler won his seventh straight win, defeating Oregon's Spencer, 6-2, 6-4. UW's freshmen, Chu and Chris Floyd had a strong showing, both defeating their opponents. Floyd shut down Oregon's Vladimir Pino in two straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Chu came back from losing his first set, winning the next two and defeating the Duck's Schiller, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. Thomas Bieri of Oregon, 6-3, 6-4, defeated husky junior Palmanschofer.
Washington will see action again on March 7th when they travel to the desert for the Arizona State Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
