
Softball Falls To LSU at NFCA Leadoff Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The fourth-ranked Washington softball team (13-4) lost to No. 12 LSU (16-3) 4-2 in the Gold Championship quarterfinal at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Tigers out hit the Huskies 7-2.
The game was a pitchers' duel through the sixth inning as LSU's Kristin Schmidt held Washington hitless and UW's Ashley Boek gave up just one hit.
The Tigers rallied in the top of the seventh inning, scoring four runs on four hits and an error to take the 4-0 lead.
The Huskies answered in the bottom half of the frame when Kristen Rivera belted a two-run home run over the centerfield fence. The hit scored Dena Tyson who had reached base after being hit by a pitch. With two outs, Kathy Fiske singled to left field to keep UW's hopes alive but Schmidt sat the next two Dawgs down in order to complete the 4-2 upset victory.
Boek finished the game with 10 strikeouts and four walks while Schmidt allowed three hits and struck out six.
With the loss, Washington moves into the consolation bracket and will face Central Michigan Sunday at 9 a.m.
