WASHINGTON
HEAD COACH JUNE DAUGHTERY
On the game: "There was tough basketball on both ends. I thought that Bell and Lalum in particular really stepped up their game in the second half and Andrea got aggressive offensively on the glass a little bit more. Jill was fanominal, if she wasn't grabbing the boards she was tipping balls to people. I just thought those two kind of changed the whole momentum in the second half. I am proud of our defense and I think that we played tough defense in both player to player and in zone tonight. Holding them to 55 points was great. It was a hard fought game and both teams played well. We are excited to get the win and move on to Arizona on Saturday.
On game intensity: "A lot went on out there and I think, especially with our seniors, that they are used to it and they know how to handle that stuff. The secret is that it just motivates the Mendiolas all the more. I don't know how much motivation they need, but it sure doesn't hurt them."
On Defense: "It was all about changing up the defense. I think that about every third time down the floor we would try and give them a different look and adjust to the things that were hurting us. I think that we were able to play a lot more player to player defense in the second half and I think that Lalum and O'Hara did a super job in the post. That was an area that really hurt us down in the desert. We were working hard down in the post all night and that's what won it for us."
GUARD Andrea Lalum
On ability to score: "During the first half I wasn't getting that many looks inside. They were definitely putting a lot of pressure on the ball so that it was hard to look inside. I was just trying to set good screens and get my teammates open. In the second half they got me the ball inside."
Giuliana Mendiola
On getting to the line: "Arizona State was playing physical, I am just glad that the refs called it tight tonight. We were just trying to attack them and get to hole and that's what we did. I guess it was a career high, wow, that is great. I totally surprised myself but I think that is great and I am very happy about it."
On defense: "We were just more focused when we came out of the lockeroom and we knew that we needed to step it up from the first half. I thought the big difference from today's game and the last time we played them was the way the post defense was. Last time we played them, they killed us on the post defense. They scored on us like crazy inside and I think that was the difference this game because we were able to stop them inside."
