Seattle - It was a historic night for the 18th-ranked Washington women's gymnastics team. For the first time in the program's history three different gymnasts recorded perfect 10s during a competition. The results helped Washington defeat 17th-ranked Arizona State 197.325 to 193.075 and end a three-meet losing streak. The Huskies improved to 6-3 while the Sun Devils dropped to 6-3.
Washington's team score was the third best in school history.
Sophomore Kelly McDonald (Seattle) and senior Emily Pritchard (Buckley) recorded their first 10s while junior Carly Dockendorf posted the fourth 10 in her career. McDonald won the all-around with a school record score of 39.825.
"I'm ecstatic, but I hurt a lot," McDonald said. "It's the best meet I've ever had. I'm so proud of the efforts of this team."
"This was an extremely exciting meet for the team," Dockendorf said. "We were focused throughout and we all enjoyed it. I didn't go four-for-four tonight, so hopefully I can go four meters tomorrow at the Pac-10s (Indoor Track Championships)."
Washington outscored the Sun Devils in all four events and swept first place in the event titles. In addition to McDonald, Pritchard and Dockendorf's winning scores, junior Molly Seaman placed first on beam turning in a career-best score of 9.950.
"I wish we could do this every time," said Husky coach Bob Levesque. "To say I'm pleased is an understatement. We knew coming in that we were going to struggle with depth. To come off the disappointment of losing in Boise like this shows the character of this team. Now if we can do this at an away meet, that would help put us into the postseason."
McDonald got Washington off to a fast start when she became just the third Husky gymnast to record a perfect score on vault. Her performance helped the Huskies score 49.200 on the event and grab the early lead in the meet. Arizona State had a devil of a time on bars during its rotation, recording a season-low score of 48.575.
Washington built on its lead during the second event when Pritchard ended the Huskies' rotation on bars with a perfect score. Combined with McDonald's 9.975 and Seaman's 9.900, Washington tied its school record on the event with a 49.475.
Washington's shot at a school record score disappeared on beam when the Huskies turned in a score of 49.050. ASU could not close the gap during their third rotation, scoring a season low of 48.100 on floor.
Pritchard was the first of three straight impressive floor routines for the Huskies during the night's final event. She went 9.925 and was followed by Dockendorf's 10. McDonald almost posted her second 10 of the meet when she scored 9.975, that included a perfect mark from one of the two judges.
Lanna Apisukh (2001) and Klara Kudilkova (1996) are the only other UW competitors to post a 10 on vault. Dockendorf (2003) and Stacy Connolly (1993) were the first Huskies to perform perfect routines on uneven bars at Washington. Dockendorf, McDonald and Pritchard's performances were the 11th, 12th and 13th scores of 10 in Washington history. McDonald became the first Husky to earn a 10 on vault during a home meet.
Washington's next meet is Feb . 20 at 14th-ranked Arizona.
