CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Husky senior Christoph Palmanshofer looks to be in good form only two matches into his 2004-05 tennis season, as he advanced to the third round of qualifying at the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships today. Palmanshofer is now one win away from reaching the tournament's main draw. However, the UW duo of Alex Slovic and Daniel Chu were eliminated from doubles qualifying.
The 88th-ranked Palmanshofer took on Illinois' 111th-ranked GD Jones in a stiff second round test. Palmanshofer dropped a close first set before responding with a solid 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win in three sets.
With a win over Boise State's Luke Shields on Wednesday, Palmanshofer will reach the main singles draw, joining Slovic, who was an automatic entrant due to his lofty No. 14 preseason ranking. Qualifying began with 34 of the top 100 players in the preseason ITA rankings competing with 16 players earning main draw bids. Main draw play runs from Oct. 7-10.
Slovic and Chu needed a win today and tomorrow to reach the main doubles draw, but lost, 8-4, to a pair from Tennessee.
