WASHINGTON
HEAD COACH JUNE DAUGHTERY
General Comments: "I'm just really proud to dedicate this game to Barbara Hedges. She really meant the world to a lot of people here in Seattle, in the country and in athletics. I think that this was a hard fought game and we knew that Oregon State was going to bring it all. They are a very good team and it was a pleasure to win that game. We were concerned about the full court pressure and all the things they do well on defense. I'm really proud the way these kids performed today. We were strong with the basketball and committed to passing the ball and passing. It's great to have nineteen assists and not the turnovers that we had a week ago."
On five players in double figures: "We're trying to do a lot of things in practice to get these guys down low and put pressure on the defense and get the ball to their open teammate. We're getting to the line a little bit more. Our spacing is better right now in our motion game than it has been in the past, so we're able to find our spot up shooters from the three-point line. They have worked hard at it and it's paying off."
On having a short line up: "We are obviously concerned not having Maggie out there. What we tried to do and we watched these guys very carefully and paid attention to their minutes. When they start to get tired we try to give them quick, short rotations. I think that it was effective tonight and get great play from all the girls."
On Shannon Howell: "She is a talent. We knew about her coming in and she has been playing since the Pac-10 started. I think at times we could have done a better job at being straight up on her and not try to block her shot. She gets to the line a lot, so at halftime we told the girls to cut her off, play straight up and get the angle and don't try to block her shot. We started Cameo on her in the second half and I thought that she did a great job on her. She's an incredible talent."
On Cameo Hicks: "We really believe in Cameo and she knows it. She hasn't been at the highest level of her game for a little bit, but that's the way it is sometimes. We kept encouraging her and have done more one on one with her and she is getting better. It was great to see that smile back on her face. She had a great first half for us."
CENTER Andrea Lalum
On coming off the win over Oregon: "I think that we needed it coming off all those loses and it can get to us if we let it. We needed a big win and we definitely got it. We have Washington State next week and then again on the road."
On playing at home: "We love playing at home. It's great playing in front of our fans and we do really well at home. The other teams know that we have great fans and homecourt advantage. We use it to our advantage, but we need to take that on the road."
On playing against Brina Chaney: "She's a big girl and a great post player. We were pushing down low and I think that we're going to have quite a good battle when we play down at Oregon State and I'm looking forward to it."
FORWARD Breanne Watson
On performance: "I think that with our team playing better, anyone on any night can step up. Whenever someone scores the defense focuses on them, so other people can get open and score and get the good shot."
