
Husky Gymnasts Defeat Boise State

Boise, ID - Competing with a thin lineup due to injuries and illness, the 12th-ranked Washington women's gymnastics team (13-6) defeated 32nd-ranked Boise State 196.050 to 195.450 in a dual meet in Boise. The Huskies were led by freshman Kelly McDonald , who won the all-around with a score of 39.275. Tanya Powers was second in the all-around at 39.250. It was the first time in McDonald's career that she has won an all-around title.
Washington gymnasts won or tied for first place on three events. Husky freshman Christina Pelaez picked up her first career win by taking the vault title with a career-best score of 9.950. McDonald was second on the event at 9.925. Stacy Wong won the beam with a score of 9.925 and Carly Dockendorf tied for top honors on floor with a 9.95. Boise State's Kea Cuaresma won the bars with a score of 9.85.
Washington opened the meet on bars and was only able to field five competitor in the event. The Huskies scored 48.500 while Boise State posted 48.400 on vault. The Huskies built their lead during the second rotation when they posted a 49.075 on vault, thanks to Pelaez's victory. At the same time the Broncos scored 48.575 on bars.
During the third rotation the Huskies put together a strong showing on floor to score 49.225 while Boise State managed to close the scoring gap by a slim margin with a 49.275 on beam. Washington put the meet away with a strong showing on beam, a problem area for the team this season, scoring 49.250. The Broncos managed a 49.200 on floor during their final rotation.
In addition to winning the all-around, McDonald was second on vault at 9.925 and placed third on floor at 9.850. Pelaez solid night also included a third-place score of 9.850 on floor exercise. Powers managed a third-place finish on vault (9.800) and was second on bars at 9.825.
The Huskies will host Cal-State Fullerton and Seattle Pacific in their final regular-season home meet of the year next Friday, March 21, at Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion. The meet starts at 7 p.m.
