SEATTLE - Brett Wiesner, making only his second start of the year, scored the only goal of the match in the 14th minute as the Washington men's soccer team beat Gonzaga, 1-0, in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Field.
Wiesner, a junior forward from Brookfield, Wis., headed in a corner kick from Troy Ready to notch the match's only tally 13:44 into the first half. Washington maintained its nearly spotless record against Gonzaga as the Huskies are now 17-0-1 all-time vs. the Bulldogs (5-7-1 this season).
Senior goalkeeper Danny Waltman recorded his fifth shutout of the season for the Huskies (9-2-2). His biggest test of the game came with about five minutes remaining as he made a diving save on GU's Kari Arnasson's blistering shot from the top of the box.
Wiesner, who started 37 matches over the last two seasons, had played in only five and started only one this season prior to Sunday's match due to an injury. The goal was his first of the year. He had eight shots Sunday, most of any player on either team.
Washington also had good scoring chances on free kicks from Ready and C.J. Klaas, but saves by Bulldogs keeper Vito Higgins held the UW to only the one goal. Higgins finished with nine saves.
The Huskies return to Pac-10 play next weekend as they play host to Stanford on Friday and California on Sunday.
