Parmlid Leads USC to Ihlanfeldt Victory by 15 Strokes

Tacoma - Led by senior All-American Mikaela Parmlid and U.S. Amateur Open champion Becky Lucidi, the USC women's golf team ran away from the field during the final round of play at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club. The Trojans expanded on the seven-stroke lead they held going into the final round, bettering second place Washington by 15 strokes.
USC shot 9-over 885 while the Huskies finished at 24-over 900, beating Pepperdine by one stroke. It marked the second consecutive tournament the Huskies have finished as runners up.
Parmlid took medalist honors after winning a one-hole playoff with Pepperdine's Lindsey Wright. Parmlid pared the 371-yard first hole while Wright missed a four-foot putt for par and bogeyed. Both players finished the tournament at 5-under 70. Parmlid carded a 5-under 68 during her final round.
"This is probably one of my best rounds," Parmlid said. "I had five birdies and no bogies. It was just a solid round. I played with Lindsey Wright and she made seven birdies, so it felt like match play out there between us."
Parmlid opened the tournament by shooting 1-over 74 on Monday and 1-under 72 on Tuesday. After her second round she decided to change her putting stance and felt that was the difference maker. It took some extra work on the putting green and her hotel room to make her completely comfortable with the new approach.
"Yesterday, I went back to the putting green and I decided to step a little closer to the ball," she said. "Then, last night, I was in my hotel room and I putted a little bit more and it felt better. I decided to try it today."
No, Parmlid and the Trojans did not spend the night in a Holiday Inn, but like the characters in the popular advertisement campaign, the next day results were noticeable.
"I'm hitting the ball well, striking the ball perfect," Parmlid said. "I've been doing that for most of the last year. I just wanted to get those putts to role in. That's how you win tournaments."
The victory marked USC's third straight championship at the Ihlanfeldt Invitational under head coach Andrea Gaston.
"Mikaela coming out today and charging and shooting that 65 really helped us," Gaston said. "I know that she was out her a long while yesterday afternoon working on her putting, but I didn't know she was doing that in her room last night.
"That does not surprise me," Gaston added. "She's dead serious about what she wants to do and this being her senior year, she had a great season last year being a first-team All-American and I know her sights are on that this year. This is her second tournament victory and I think it was a little bigger for her because last year she was a 36-hole event and this was 54 holes."
Washington coach Mary Lou Mulflur was also pleased with her team's second straight runner-up showing after finishing behind New Mexico at the Comcast-Dick McGuire Invitational.
"We know we can win," Mulflur said. "They're very capable of that. The good news is that two weeks in a row we've put ourselves in a position where we've had a chance to win. We keep doing that and the wins will come."
Husky junior Lindsay Morgan agreed.
"I feel like we left a lot of shots out there today," said Morgan, who tied with teammate Paige Mackenzie for 13th at 6-over 225. "There are some I'd like to have over again. I think we put a good effort forth, it was just that some stuff didn't go in. That's hard."
Washington was led by Louise Friberg who shot 3-over 222 to tie for seventh. Husky freshman Sung Ea Lee was 19th at 9-over 228 after posting three straight rounds of 76. Michelle Grafos was 32nd at 15-over 234.
