Lucid Has Record Setting Round in Grabbing Ihlanfeldt Lead

Tacoma, Wash.-USC's Becky Lucid, the defending U.S. Amateur Champion, shot 65 to grab the first round lead at Washington's Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club. Lucid's score helped the Trojans grab a four-stroke lead over host Washington on the par-73 course. USC finished the first day of play at even par 292 while the Huskies shot 296. California is third at 299 and BYU and Pepperdine are tied for fourth at 8-over 300.
Lucid's score broke the course record for by one stroke. Current Husky head coach Mary Lou Mulflur set the old mark with a 66 in 1997 during a practice round with her team prior to the course hosting the Pac-10 Championships.
Lucid, who won the long drive championship at last year's NCAA Championships at Washington National Golf Club, posted birdies on holes four, five and nine to make the turn at 3-under 33. She birdied holes 12 through 14 and 17 and 18 on the back nine to finish at 8-under. Lucid did not have a bogey during her round.
She needed just 25 putts during her round. Lucid hit all every fairway with her drives and made the green in regulation on all but two holes.
"I put the ball in close today and that was the difference," Lucid said. "I felt I had the right line all day when putting. I made a few early and that really gave me a lot of confidence."
Lucid quickly put aside her strong showing.
"Our goal coming up here was to win as a team and that's what we want to accomplish," she said. "We came here with basically a new team from a year ago. We have two freshman and a junior college transfer playing this weekend, so we're excited to see what we can do. I really like the chemistry of this group."
Lucid was 71st in her first tournament this year, shooting 240 at the Fall Preview at Purdue. She tied for 31st at the 2002 NCAA Championships.
"Tomorrow I just want to keep my focus the same, fairways and greens," said the San Diego native. "I'm not going to get ahead of myself. There's still two days of golf left and there are some really good players in this tournament."
Pepperdine's Katherine Hull, Oregon's Therese Wenslow and Oregon State's Leah Whiting are tied for second at 2-under 71. Washington's Paige Mackenzie and UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas carded opening rounds of 1-under 72.
The Huskies Lindsay Morgan and Louise Friberg shot 1-over 74 to tie for 11th while freshman Sung Ea Lee, playing on her home course, carded a 76 along with senior Michelle Grafos.
"We needed to do a better job with our short game today," said Husky coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "We're in it and we'll see where we can go from here. I think we are capable of playing better."
