Washington vs. No. 22 Arizona
Feb. 8, 2001
UW Coach June Daugherty On the win: "This is an exciting win for us. Arizona is a very good team. They have been in the national rankings and have been playing good basketball lately. I think the difference for us tonight is that we were able to stay poised and control the tempo. Arizona is a team that can get on runs and put a lot of points up.We did a good job controlling the tempo, going inside out and working the clock. I think our zone caused a lot of problems for them. A lot of time came off the clock before they even looked for a shot."
On defense: "We were able to switch up the defense and able to get quick double teams off the post. We had some nice double downs by the points guards who were able to get steals and make big plays.
On Saturday: "We will come out and try to keep the majority of the focus on us and buckle down defensively especially inside on (Melody) Johnson. She is one of the premier post players in the league if not in the country. We also can't give up the three-point plays like we did down there at their place. They have good guards as well, so we will have to get out on their shooters."
Sophomore guard Loree Payne On Arizona guard Reshea Bristol: "Reshea is a great player. She is quick to guard. We mixed it up on zone and man to man and kept her covered inside. You have to know where she is, and that was effective for us."
On team's play: "I think we showed a lot of poise. The good thing with this team is that even if the other team goes on runs, we come back in the end. That is really special. We didn't have that last year or even earlier this year. We have definitely gotten better. We let them in a little bit, but then we stepped up and got back in the end."
Sophomore guard Kellie O'Neill: On defense: "They were extremely quick. We focused all week on staying on our right foot and staying down. That is a new thing for us. Sometimes we got in lapses and stood up and they took advantage of it. That is something we are going to focus on."
Arizona Head Coach Joan Bonvicini ON DEFENSE: "They had so many open looks and got position on us, we were back on our heels. It was very disappointing. We had a nice run out of halftime, we played better in the second half, but trying to come back from 20 points was tough. Washington was on fire shooting and they have so many players that can shoot, and our team has to realize that defense and rebounds wins games on the road."
YOUNG PLAYERS: "We have a good core group of players and a lot of young players and one thing they learn on the road is they have to play better defense and play differently than at home."
ON THE GAME: " They have a lot of good three point shooters and went to the lob a lot more this game because we extended to a full court press the whole game to change the tempo. They were able to make adjustments and spread out the floor though."
Arizona senior guard Reshea Bristol ON PERIMETER SHOOTING: "Our defensive transition hurt us, and we didn't get back on defense. It seems like every one of their players shot a three and when one makes it everyone gets on a role. We just had to step out on them and not let them get the drive, yet they're good shooters too."
