Player and Coach Quotes
Washington vs. Michigan
Sunday, December 9, 2001
Michigan Head Coach Sue Guevera
General Remarks: "I think we are very fortunate to get out of here with this win. I thought our kids did a really nice job, especially in the second half, of weathering the storms because Washington got the lead, we were able to get it back and then they made a run. The crowd was really into it. It really felt like an NCAA tournament game with the atmosphere. But I thought our kids stayed cool, they stayed calm and collected. We knew we were going to try to get the ball inside and we did.
On LeeAnn Bies: "LeeAnn Bies just has ice in her veins. She is supposed to go to the line 10 times a game. That is our bread and butter and we went to it. We went to it all weekend and we also stayed in our 3-2 zone all game. That's the first time we have done that all season. We knew Washington was going to shoot the three and they did. They had 18 three-point attempts in the first half and I commented to my staff that there was no way they would shoot 18 again in the second half. Wrong. But we knew that they would shoot the three so we knew it was just a matter of not panicking. We did a great job of getting the ball up and down the floor. I was very pleased with the effort of our team. We played without two seniors and we have got some kids that are really stepping up."
Michigan Center LeeAnn Bies
On her pivotal rebound to get to the line: "I saw the shot going up and I actually thought (Tabitha Pool) was going to lob it to me. Then I saw it was a shot and I looked up and saw it was going to be short. I guess I just thought there was no way I wasn't going to get that board."
On the free throws to win the game: "Thursday at practice we had a free throw contest. We split the team up and my team won one time and the other team won once. So we had each team pick anybody out of the five to shoot a one-and-one and my team chose me. I was thinking about that today because I made the first but missed the second in practice and my team ended up losing. That was actually what was going through my mind out there today. I had a second shot to redeem myself from practice."
Washington Players Quotes
Loree Payne
On Last Shot: "Those shots you don' think twice about, you just shoot it and this time it happened to be a little long. The shot just didn't fall but it felt good. Guili had a great drive, penetrated and got a lot of their baseline players over."
On shooting: "My shot happened to be on tonight and it felt good. We were getting a lot of easy looks in their zone. I thought I was open a lot. When you are open like that you have got to take those shots and fortunately some them were falling."
On eight last minutes of game: "The last eight minutes of the game our intensity was continually growing. We had some big runs and there was a lot of energy on the floor and our fans were incredible. I didn't think we had a let down. Our intensity maintained and they just happened to get a couple of things going their way."
Andrea Lalum
On the next two weeks: "We have to come back because we have a long stretch ahead of us with the next two weeks of practices. We have to work hard in practice and hopefully it will pay off during the games. The Pac-10 is our next focus, we have to look to the future and we can't rest or dwell on this game."
Coach June Daugherty
General Remarks: "This was a great college game and the thing that would have made it better was if we had won and hit the shot at the end. When those shot don't go and we get looks from Loree Payne and Kristen O'Neill cleaning up on the back side, that's just basketball. I was very proud of our team and we played a great weekend of basketball at the Pac-10/Big Ten Challenge. We definitely stepped it up as a team and unfortunately we didn't get a win, but to me you have to walk away from defeat with courage because that was a very good team. We have a chance to beat them and it didn't happen. We see a lot of improvement in the team and it was a great experience and we will take this and build on it."
On the last time out called: "We wanted to get set up and go ahead and push the ball. We wanted to set up the play and come down and score. Guiliana did just what we wanted her to do, she looked to kick it out and did. We got a super look, great spot up from Loree Payne who was having a great offensive game and the shot didn't fall."
On Jennifer Smith and LeeAnn Bies: "They are great players who complement each other very well. They take up a lot of space inside. We knew we had our hands full coming into the game. They both did a terrific job on the glass but we did a great job second half of the game stopping there high/low."
