Postgame Quotes
Head coach June Daugherty
General Remarks: "We got out of the blocks pretty well, the first seven or eight minutes of the first half. We've got a long way to go as far as continuing to build on that type of intensity and putting two 20-minute halves together. Individually we had some people do some real nice work both offensively and defensively. We are starting to click in certain combinations and areas. I was not happy with the foul trouble we were in early on. We can improve a lot on the defensive side of things. Exhibitions are a good way to point out things that you don't see in practice everyday and these are some things we can take into practice tomorrow and work on to get ready to open up the season at Montana State."
On Defense: "Defensively we didn't do a very good job rotating and the baseline was a real source of problems. We allowed them to get into the bonus way to early against both our zone and man. I was pleased with the intensity in our 2-2-1, our press, but when we fell back half court we lost a little bit of our intensity."
On sister combination: "They are both our there so much in practice that I don't even realize it. With the foul trouble that we had we had to rotate Kristin O'Neil in at point. That is good because they definitely have a good feel for each other. We talk about the Mendiolas being able to feel when the other is going to zig or zag. Kristin did a good job trying to find Kellie inside, and vice versa."
On Rebounding: "First of all the Lady Express did a good job, especially getting 19 boards against us. We felt we could have been a lot more physical in our "war zone." We gave up way to many offensive boards, giving up 19 is not the goal and that is something we definitely need to work on."
On defense: "We started off well in our press. We started off in the press tonight as opposed to what you saw last week. The team has worked very hard in that area and is excited to get out there and show it. What we got out of it the most is the Lady Express rushed down at the other end. We were in zone or in man and it was difficult for them to adjust."
Washington Players
Junior guard Loree Payne
On leading the game in rebounds:
"We were doing the war zone and the ball just kept coming to me. It's exciting when you see the ball and can just go after it, and it falls your way. It fell my way tonight."
On various inbound plays:
"We've got a lot of options off our set inbound plays, and it so happened that they were putting a lot of pressure on the guards, and so we went to the players on the block. It's an inside/out game and it worked for us last year and we're carrying it over to this year. It's one of our main focuses to work it inside out."
Junior forward Kellie O'Neill
On exhibition play:
"The teams we played were good and had experience. I think we just came out and didn't put together an intense game but our work ethic is there. We know what we're supposed to do, we just didn't put it together. We're on the right track and if you compare it to any point last year in the beginning, I think we know the system better. We come out and bring it, we just weren't that intense tonight."
On playing with her sister Kristen:
"It's fun to play with her and we definitely have a connection out there. It's gotten better everyday. We're starting to get a feel for how each other plays."
