BURNABY, B.C. - Sophomore Hope Solo did a little bit of everything for the Washington women's soccer team on Wednesday during a 7-0 exhibition victory at Simon Fraser University.
Solo played 57 shutout minutes as the Huskies' goalkeeper before moving onto the field as a forward. She scored Washington's fifth goal in the 75th minute and set up the team's final goal in the 82nd minute. Solo's assist enabled junior Gina Brewer to complete a hat trick.
Brewer scored all three of her goals within a 10-minute span late in the game. The Fife (Wash.) High School product notched the team's fourth goal, on an assist from Malia Arrant, in the 72nd minute. Her second tally came in the 79th minute, off a pass from freshman Liz Taylor.
After starting the game in goal and registering two saves, Solo was replaced by senior Leslie Weeks in the 58th minute. Weeks preserved the shutout, saving one shot over the final 33 minutes.
Solo has had a unique history of soccer participation. She amassed 109 career goals at Richland (Wash.) High School and also starred as a forward at the club level. But, it is as a goalkeeper that Solo is better known. In fact, she is one of the premier goalies in the United States.
She was selected as one of four goalkeepers to play during the spring and summer with the U.S. Women's National Team in preparation for the Olympic Games. Solo was not one of the two goalkeepers chosen for the Olympic team so she returned to campus in August to begin training again with the Huskies.
A second-team 1999 All-Pacific-10 Conference goalkeeper, Solo had three shutouts, 77 saves and a 1.64 goals against average in 12 games last year. She saw action in one game as a forward and attempted one shot.
Junior Erin Otagaki opened the scoring against Simon Fraser in the 26th minute, converting a pass from Arrant. That was the lone first-half goal. Washington immediately added to that slim margin, getting an unassisted goal from junior Katie Goodeve four minutes into the second half.
Freshman Melissa Bennett put UW ahead 3-0 in the 58th minute off a pass from junior Caroline Putz. The Huskies have lofty expectations for Bennett, a prolific scorer from Seattle Christian High School who owns the all-time Washington state prep scoring record with 166 career goals. She broke the previous record of 152 goals established by her sister, Tami Bennett, a senior on the Husky squad.
All eligible Huskies played in the game that served as their final tune-up before the regular season begins at home on Saturday against Eastern Washington. Kick-off is noon at Husky Soccer Field.
