TUCSON, Ariz. - Junior Kim DePaul hit a sixth-inning homer and senior Jennifer Spediacci shut out No. 4 Arizona to lead second-ranked Washington to a 1-0 win over the Wildcats to win the Pepsi Arizona Softball Classic on Saturday. UW downed No. 5 Southern Miss, 8-6, earlier in the day.
DePaul got two of three Husky hits in the nightcap, one of which flew over the center field wall with two outs in the sixth. Spediacci pitched the complete game, and junior Christie Rosenblad made two critical throws home in the bottom of the sixth to help preserve the shut out. Spediacci struck out six batters.
That outing saw one or more runs scored in every inning by at least one of the teams. Senior Rosie Leutzinger walked, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before DePaul sacrificed her home. Southern Miss answered off a single, an error and a sacrifice.
Four hits in the next frame produced three runs. Freshman Jaime Clark doubled to lead off the inning and went to third on a wild pitch before sophomore Shannon Walsh singled her home. Erin Helgeland, pinch running for Walsh, stole second, advanced to third on a Rosenblad single, and both scored on a single to center field by junior Kelly Hauxhurst.
Freshman Jenny Topping walked, and pinch runner Jessica Bork made it to second on an error during Clark's at-bat. Senior Melissa Downs then walked to advance all runners, and Walsh sacrificed Bork home to put UW up, 5-1.
The Huskies scored twice more before the Eagles crossed the plate. In the fourth, Rosenblad singled again and stole second before making it home on a wild pitch. Downs took advantage of an error in the fifth to get on base, and pinch runner Becky Simpson stole second before a wild pitch put her on third. Walsh hit her second sacrifice fly of the game for the Huskies' sixth run.
USM's Gant pounded a ball over the left center fence in the fifth and then scored another the next inning off a walk, a double and a fielder's choice. DePaul came back with a walk, was sacrificed to second and advanced home on an errant throw to first to give Washington an 8-3 cushion, but the Eagles were not finished.
Two singles, two sacrifice flies, a triple and a hit batter combined to pull Southern Miss to within 8-6 in the bottom of the seventh before the Huskies closed the door. Senior Jamie Graves earned the win, striking out seven and allowing one run in five and two-thirds innings of work.
