NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Senior Rosie Leutzinger collected five hits and freshman Jaime Clark scored four runs, including pounding her second career homer, to lead the second-ranked Huskies to a 10-0 win over San Diego State in five innings and a 9-5 win over Cal State Northridge on the first day of the Matador Invitational. UW improves to 5-0 and will face Northridge and Santa Clara on Saturday.
Washington used two hits each by senior pitcher Jamie Graves, who earned the win, junior Christie Rosenblad and senior Rosie Leutzinger to pound the Aztecs. The Huskies scored five runs in the first and four more in the third to put the game away.
Leutzinger led off with a single, stole second and was pushed to third by junior Kelly Hauxhurst. She scored on a single by freshman Jamie Clark, who then stole second herself. After senior Melissa Downs and sophomore Shannon Walsh walked, Graves doubled to the center field wall to score Clark and Downs. Walsh and Graves then crossed home plate on Rosenblad's blooper to short.
After a three-up, three-down second inning, UW's offense returned the next frame. Clark walked and was sacrificed to second by Downs, who reached first safely. Graves and Rosenblad both singled to send Clark home, and Leutzinger doubled to center field to score Graves, Rosenblad and Helgeland, who got on base on a fielder's choice.
Junior Kim DePaul scored the lone run in the fourth inning, singling, moving to second on a Clark fielder's choice and returning home on a pair of errors.
In the nightcap, Leutzinger singled and Hauxhurst walked before DePaul sacrificed them up a base. A single by Downs pushed both across the plate. Clark's second homer cleared the scoreboard in center field in the third inning to put UW up, 3-0, before the Matadors answered with two runs in the bottom of the third.
A deluge of Husky runs came in the fourth frame off four hits. Rosenblad led off with her second walk of the game, was sacrificed to second by senior Jeanine Giordano and scored off Leutzinger's triple down the right field line. Hauxhurst followed that with a double to the left-center field to score Leutzinger. A single by Clark and double by senior pitcher Jennifer Spediacci made it 8-2.
But CSN wouldn't quit, scoring a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth before the Huskies finished the scoring in the seventh on a pair of doubles by Rosenblad and Leutzinger. Spediacci struck out five in the first three innings before Graves finished the game and earned the win.
