No. 2 Huskies Remain Undefeated At Matador Invitational

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Senior Erin Helgeland hit a pair of home runs and freshman Jaime Clark added another as Washington downed Cal State Northridge, 3-0, and Santa Clara, 5-2, on the second day of the Matador Invitational. The tournament wraps up tomorrow, when UW faces San Diego State and Santa Clara at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
The Huskies used five hits against the Matadors, while senior Jennifer Spediacci pitched her second complete-game shut out of the season, striking out six batters. Junior Kim DePaul reached first on a fielder's choice in the first frame and rounded the bases when Clark tripled down the right field line to put UW up, 1-0.
Helgeland's first homer of the day came in the fifth inning, a solo shot to center field. Washington scored again in the next frame when Clark was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a Melissa Downs double.
UW posted their first come-from-behind victory in the nightcap, as Santa Clara pushed a run across in the second inning, but the Broncos would not score again until the sixth. The Dawgs evened the score in the fourth inning. Senior Jamie Graves singled and stole second before rounding the bases on a single down the right field line by sophomore Shannon Walsh.
The Huskies scored two more in the fifth off five hits. Hauxhurst singled and made it home on DePaul's double to center field, though DePaul was tagged out in her attempt to stretch it into a triple. Clark followed that with a double of her own and was hit home off a single by Downs.
Washington's final two runs came off home runs by Helgeland in the sixth and Clark in the seventh. It was the third of the season for both.
Graves went the distance to improve to 4-0, striking out three and allowing three hits.
