SAN MARCOS, Texas - The No. 2 Huskies used six home runs, including a grand slam by junior Texas native Kim DePaul, to upend Southwest Texas State, 9-1 and 13-2, on Thursday. Washington improves to 9-0 this season, matching the 1996's best start in program history, and will compete this weekend in the Texas Invitational in Austin.
Redshirt freshman Jenny Topping and freshman Jaime Clark each pounded two home runs, and senior Rosie Leutzinger hitting her second four-bagger of her career. Seniors Jennifer Spediacci (4-0) and Jamie Graves (5-0) each allowed just three hits in earning the wins, with Spediacci striking out six in four innings and Graves whiffing eight in five frames.
In the first outing, Leutzinger singled and stole second before DePaul singled her home to open the scoring. Southwest Texas homered in the second inning to even the score, but the Huskies pulled ahead in the third for good. DePaul reached first on a fielder's choice and immediately stole second. A double by Topping brought her home, and Clark's first home run made the score 4-0.
In the fifth frame, doubles by Clark and senior Melissa Downs gave UW another run, and Washington got four more in the sixth inning to end the game early. Senior Erin Helgeland singled and stole second to give Leutzinger a two-RBI home run down the right field line. Junior Kelly Hauxhurst singled and Topping homered her home to end the scoring.
The Bobcats jumped out of the gates early in the nightcap, however, pushing two unearned runs across the plate off two hits and an error. But they would manage just one other hit the remainder of the game.
The Huskies finally put a run on the board in the third off Topping's second homer of the day. In the next inning, UW used yet another shot over the fence and three more hits to go up 6-0. Graves walked and moved to third off singles by sophomore Shannon Walsh and Helgeland. Hauxhurst then walked to send Graves home and set up DePaul's grand slam, the third in program history.
Seven more runs came in what would be the final inning, as UW sent 11 players to the plate. Downs walked and Graves sacrificed her to second while reaching first safely. A wild pitch moved Graves and pinch runner Jessica Bork up a base before Walsh and Leutzinger walked to bring Bork home. Hauxhurst's fielder's choice and an error scored Graves, and Walsh and Leutzinger came around to score on a DePaul single and subsequent error. Clark then sent her fifth ball of the season out of the park for the Huskies' final run.
