TEMPE, Ariz. - Junior Caroline Putz scored the lone goal in the 29th minute as the sixth-ranked Washington women's soccer team extended its winning streak to six games Friday with a 1-0 victory over No. 21 Arizona State at Sun Devil Soccer Field.
Washington (12-1, 3-0) now stands alone atop the Pac-10 standings, dealing the Sun Devils (11-2, 2-1) their first conference defeat. It was the sixth victory for the Huskies over a nationally-ranked opponent. The only UW loss came against top-ranked Notre Dame.
Putz returned to the starting lineup after missing two starts last week with an injured ankle. She placed a 10-yard shot from the left side into the net midway through the first half. The unassisted tally, at 28:56, was the sixth goal of the season for Putz and her fourth game-winner.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hope Solo repelled an intense ASU attack, registering all four of her saves after halftime. Washington posted a slim 10-9 shot advantage, but was outshot 6-3 in the second half. Erin Reinke had six saves for the Sun Devils.
The Huskies conclude their two-game road trip on Sunday at Arizona.
