AMHERST, Mass. - The No. 16 Washington Husky soccer team scored two goals in as many minutes in the final nine minutes of regulation to pull even with host Massachusetts on the second day of the UMass Soccer Classic, but the Minutemen netted the game-winner 11 minutes into overtime to win the tournament.
Washington will play its home opener on Friday at 3 p.m. against San Jose State and then take on Fresno State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
UW juniors Kai Carroll netted both goals at UMass to give the Huskies, 3-3-1, a chance for the win. At 81:13, Carroll struck off a cross from junior Mark Hogenhout, and then Carroll tied the game at 83:28 off long pass from sophomore Benjamin Somoza that was one-touched by sophomore Bryn Ritchie.
The Minutemen had taken the lead early, scoring goals at 7:24 and 37:29. Then in extra minutes, Adam Black, who netted the first goal, stole the ball and pushed it past a defender and then past UW keeper James Dickinson for the game-winner.
Washington outshot UMass, as it has all but one of its opponents this season, by a 19-15 count, and held a 9-0 corner-kick advantage. The start was the first for Dickinson, who had four saves on the day. Carroll and sophomore defender Billy Sleeth were named to the all-tournament team.
