SEATTLE - Sophomore forward Caroline Putz played a part in both goals, scoring in the first half and adding a second-half assist on Wednesday during Washington's 2-0 exhibition women's soccer victory over Portland State at Husky Soccer Field.
Sophomore Katie Goodeve served a long pass in the air to Putz who flicked the ball from 15 yards away past the goalkeeper at 18:54. That was the only goal of the half for the Huskies despite outshooting Portland State 15-0 before halftime.
Putz set up the Huskies' second goal with a pass near the goalmouth to Erin Otagaki with four minutes remaining. The ball deflected off a defender right to UW senior Stacy Merlitti who headed it in from 17 yards.
Kim Marshel registered eight saves for the Vikings who were outshot 32-1. Washington goalkeepers Leslie Weeks and Hope Solo, who each played one half, were not called upon to make a save.
The next action for the Huskies is Sept. 3 when they begin the regular season on the road against 10th-ranked Clemson.
