SEATTLE - The Washington men's soccer team opened its exhibition season with a 3-0 shutout over Brigham Young on Tuesday at Husky Soccer Stadium. UW will host British Columbia on Saturday at 3 p.m. before opening the regular season at Gonzaga on Sept. 1.
The Dawgs got on the board early with a close-range goal by senior Rees Bettinger at 11:23, with classmate Wes Hart assisting. After head coach Dean Wurzberger started a completely different lineup in the second half, sophomore Greg Foisie drilled a pass from classmate Benjamin Somoza into the upper left corner at 53:29. Somoza then converted a penalty kick at 83:07 for the final score.
UW freshmen keepers Chad Olsen and Colin Hanke made four saves each, playing in the first and second halves, respectively. BYU netminder Josh Morris had five saves. The Huskies outshot BYU, 17-13, but the Cougars held a 6-4 corner-kick advantage.
"We put two different teams on the field for each half," Wurzberger said, "and I'm happy with the result. Colin Hanke did a great job to preserve the shutout in the second half. We're still working out the kinks as far as who will play in what position, but we're excited to keep going forward. BYU was a tough team physically. They were exactly what we were looking for in terms of a challenge."
