MORAGA, Calif. (AP) - Led by Senque Carey's 19 points and two key baskets in the second half by Chris Wolcott, Washington opened its season with a 73-60 victory over host St. Mary's on Monday night.
Wolcott broke a 51-51 tie, making good on a 3-point play with 7:25 remaining. He hit a basket a minute later to put the Huskies (1-0) ahead for good.
Frank Allocco, who began the second half with eight points as St. Mary's took a 39-34 lead, had 19 points to lead the Gaels.
Allocco, hitting his third 3-pointer of the half, gave the Gaels a 51-49 lead with 8:13 left. But it was their last advantage as Wolcott, who finished with 13 points, hit a turnaround jumper with 1:33 remaining. That helped Washington finish a 22-9 run that kept the Gaels (0-2) at bay.
Brad Millard, St. Mary's 7-foot-3, 345-pound fifth-year senior, had 18 points and 12 rebounds.
The Huskies jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start the game, but then missed nine of 10 free throws and went without a basket for 8:40. That allowed the Gaels to go on an 11-0 run and take a three-point lead.
But Washington, led by seven points from Wolcott, went on a 21-8 tear as St. Mary's failed to hit a field goal for almost seven minutes and the Huskies retook the lead.
