SEATTLE - Junior midfielder Katey Ward scored the winning goal during the fourth minute of overtime Friday, leading the Washington women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Arizona State at Husky Soccer Field.
Washington improved its Pacific-10 Conference record to 4-1-1 with a 7-7-1 overall mark. The Sun Devils dropped to 2-4 in Pac-10 play with a 10-6 overall record.
Junior Tami Bennett set up the decisive goal, passing to senior Jana Wilson on the left side of the goal mouth. Wilson fed the ball to Ward who was alone in front of the goal and booted home the game-winner from 8 yards out at 93:36. It was the first goal of the season for Ward, a product of Tacoma's Bellarmine Prep High School who sat out the entire 1998 season with a knee injury.
The sudden-death goal ended the game during the first 15-minute overtime session after the teams had battled through 90 scoreless minutes of regulation.
Junior goalkeeper Leslie Weeks made three saves for Washington which outshot the Sun Devils 24-9. Arizona State's Erin Reinke registered seven saves.
Husky senior Anna Biddle opened the scoring eight minutes into the second half. She stole the ball from an ASU defender and fired a 12-yard shot into the net at 52:24.
Arizona State got the equalizer at 63:51 as Karine Inoue scored on a 7-yard header off a long free kick from Kim Wagner.
