Julia Paulsen returns for her fifth season as a member of the Washington staff in 2023-24. In October, 2019, she was named the new director of operations for the men's and women's rowing teams.
Paulsen, who wrapped up a highly successful undergraduate rowing career in 2018, returned to Conibear Shellhouse as the team's intern coach last season (2018-19), when she took charge of the UW novice eight that won the Pac-12 Championship. She was also part of a the Collegiate Rowing Coaching Association's Coaching Staff of the Year, after the Huskies swept the NCAA Championship grand finals for the second time in the last three years.
Paulsen, who graduated from Seattle' Bush School, spent four years on the UW roster, earning numerous victories through her four years. In 2018, she was a member of Washington's second varsity eight that won both the Pac-12 and NCAA Championships. She also rowed in Washington's women's quad sculls that competed in the Princess Grace Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta in summer of 2018.
In 2018, Paulsen earned Academic All-Pac-12 honorable mention, having earned her degree in medical anthropology and global health.
As a junior in 2017, Paulsen also won an national championship, rowing in the UW four that won its grand final and was a part of the UW team that swept all three grand finals and took home the NCAA title. In both 2015 and 2016, Paulsen won a Pac-12 title in the Huskies' third varsity eight.
An alpine ski racer during her high school years, Paulsen also rowed at the junior level for Seattle's Lake Union club, competing at junior national championships, the San Diego Crew Classic and Head of the Lake.
