Sam Casto joined the Washington coaching staff in the summer of 2019, joining the Huskies after one season at Gonzaga. At UW, she'll be reunited with fellow Josh Gautreau, who coached her at the University of Virginia. She enters her second season with the Huskies in 2020-21.

In her one season in Spokane, she helped lead the Bulldogs to the NCAA Championships, where they finished 20th in the nation. Prior to her year at Gonzaga, she was an assistantย lightweightย coach at Harvard (2016-17 season), guiding that team's third varsity eight to the gold medal at Eastern Sprints.

Casto began rowing as a freshman on the club team at Georgia Tech before transferring to the University of Virginia, where she became a two-time All-Americanย and was the Cavaliers' team captain as a senior. As a sophomore in 2014, she won an NCAA bronze medal in the second varsity eight, coached by Gautreau, before earning another bronze in the varsity eight the following year. As a senior, she raced in the V8 that finished fifth at NCAAs and helped lead the Cavaliers to a third-place team finish.ย

Casto earned All-America and All-Region honors from the CRCA as a junior and senior and was a three-time Atlantic Coast Conference champion.

While an undergrad, she raced in the single and quad sculls for the United States at the 2014 and 2015 World Rowing Under 23 Championships.

Originally from Dallas, Pa., Casto graduated from UVa with a degree in aerospace engineering and spent a year at the Institute for Rowing Leadership, where she attended rowing-specific classes in exercise science, sport administration, and coaching pedagogy.ย
