During the most recent UW season, 2023-24, Espinoza helped guide the UW men to a clean sweep at the 2024 IRA National Championship Regatta, where Washington won the first, second and third varsity eights, as well as the varsity four, to claim the program's 20th National Championship and 18th James Ten Eyck Memorial Award (overall points).
Following the 2024 season, Espinoza and his fellow UW coaches were named the IRCA Staff of the Year.
Washington's most recent successes have come thanks in large part to Espinoza's efforts. In 2021, the Huskies returned from the year lost to the pandemic to sweep all five races at the 2021 Pac-12 Championships, and then all four at the 2021 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship Regatta, winning the 17th James Ten Eyck Trophy in program history.
In 2022, the Huskies medals in all three eights events at IRAs and a UW four won the Visitors' Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta. In 2023, Washington earned two silvers and a bronze in the eights at IRAs, and went on to have an eight reach the finals of the Prince Albert Challenge Cup at Henley.
In 2018-19, Espinoza was part of a staff that led Washington to its third consecutive Pac-12 Championship and its 12th Ten Eyck in the last 13 years. Along with the Ten Eyck (overall points at the Intercollegiate Rowing Assocation championship regatta), the Huskies won the national title in the third varstiy eight and the varsity four. After the 2019 season, Espinoza coached the United States Under-23 men's coxed four for the second summer in a row.
In 2020, Espinoza was named to USRowing's new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee and to the Equity and Inclusion Committee for the Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association (IRCA).
In 2018, he also helped coach the Huskies to the Pac-12 Championship and the James Ten Eyck Trophy. In the summer of 2018, Espinoza was in charge of the United States Under-23 men's coxed four, which won the gold medal at the 2018 World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Poland.
As a first-year UW coach in 2017, he helped guide the Washington program to the Pac-12 Championship and to victories in three of four events at the 2017 Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships, where the Huskies won their 10th James Ten Eyck Trophy in the last 11 years as overall points champion.
Espinoza joined the UW men's rowing program in 2016 after spent the summer as an intern rowing coach for the U.S. Junior National Team where he assisted with camp logistics, led video accumulation and dissemination efforts, and coached small boats.
Espinoza spent the previous five summers coaching at the River City Rowing Club in West Sacramento, Calif. There he coached junior high and high school students who now compete at collegiate rowing powerhouses such as Washington, Harvard, and Brown.
Espinoza spent four years on the University of Puget Sound rowing program, where he was a three-year captain of the men's varsity team. In addition to rowing at UPS, he earned his B.S. in exercise science and served as president of his fraternity during his senior year.
"Washington Rowing is the standard for all rowing programs across the globe. From the historic Conibear Shellhouse, to the unparalleled commitment from Alumni and the Seattle community, Washington Rowing is truly one of a kind. I'm honored to be a part of this community and look forward to developing fast boats and even better people".
