Margaret Phillips, who spent the 2017-18 school year as an intern coach with the Washington women's rowing team, will move into an assistant coach position for the 2018-19 season.
Phillips will continue to oversee the Huskies' historically successful walk-on system and will administer the Hometown Husky program, which awards a tuition scholarship to one high school senior from the state of Washington, who has no experience in rowing.
Fresh from a college rowing career that culminated in the 2017 NCAA Championship, Phillips joined the Washington coaching staff for the 2017-18 school year and coached the Huskies' novice eight to the Pac-12 Championship.
Phillips, from Stanwood, Wash., captained the Huskies as a senior in 2017, leading the UW to the first sweep of all three grand finals in the 21-year history of the NCAA Championship regatta. She rowed in the No. 7 seat in the second varsity eight. She was also a part of the first Husky team to win the Pac-12 Championship since 2003.
Prior to her senior season, Phillips also won a silver medal at the 2016 NCAA Championships in the Husky varsity four and earned a gold at the 2015 Pac-12 Championships as a member of the third varsity eight.
Phillips earned her degree in the comparative history of ideas from the UW in 2017.
