In 2017-18, Matt Rung enters his fourth season as the First Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for Washington Men’s Rowing, and fifth season overall at the Conibear Shellhouse.
In combination with his coaching duties, Rung spearheads Washington’s global recruiting effort to find the best oarsmen in the world to row for the Huskies.
Last year, in addition to his recruiting duties, Rung coached Washington's second varsity eight to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association championship, as the UW crew held off Cal for its 28th Kennedy Challenge Cup. The Husky 2V also won its race at the Pac-12 Championships and helped the UW win the overall Pac-12 title and its 10th Jim Ten Eyck Memorial Trophy (overall points at IRAs) in the last 11 years.
During his first two seasons at UW, Rung led the freshman program to great success. In the most recent 2015-2016 season, the first freshman eight mounted a major upset victory at the IRA National Championship to win gold after early dual-season losses, securing Washington’s 5th consecutive victory in the event. During the 2014-2015 season, Rung’s first freshman eight won the Pac-12 Championship title and later went on to dominate the IRA National Championship, winning gold in freshman eight by nearly 5 seconds.
As an intern coach during the 2011-2012 season, Rung also coached the Men's Open 4+, which won gold and set the course record at the 2012 IRA National Championship Regatta.
Beyond the intercollegiate rowing scene, Rung coached the United States Under 23 Men’s Coxed Four to A-final finishes at the World Rowing Championships in Varese, Italy in 2014 and Plovdiv, Bulgaria in 2015. Rung also assisted the Under 23 Women’s National Team Program in the summer of 2015 with Head Coach Dave O’Neill.
Prior to coaching at Washington, Rung served two seasons at his alma mater as the First Assistant Coach for Men's Lightweight Crew at Cornell University. During his tenure alongside Head Coach Chris Kerber, the Big Red captured the 2014 Jope Cup: team points trophy and the Varsity Eight won the 2014 Eastern Sprints and IRA National Championship, after an undefeated regular season - an accomplishment not seen in decades at Cornell. In those two years, Rung also guided the frosh eights to two silver medals and one bronze medal at the 2013 and 2014 Eastern Sprints Championships.
Rung graduated from Cornell University with a degree in English, where he rowed on Varsity Lightweight Crew for four years, won a National Championship at the IRA, and was elected lightweight captain during his senior year in 2009-2010.
He attended high school at St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute in Buffalo, NY where he also rowed four years and was team captain. During the summers, he rowed for the West Side Rowing Club.
