JaMarcus Shephard joined the Washington coaching staff in January, 2022. He serves as head coach Kalen DeBoer's wide receivers coach.
In his first season with the Huskies, Shephard oversaw a receivers unit that helped the Husky offense return to among the most prolific in the nation. Washington led the nation in both passing offense (369.8 yards per game) and third-down conversions (57 percent) while also finishing second in total offense (515.8 yards per game). Just one season earlier, Washington finished the season 73rd in pass offense and 114th in total offense.
The Huskies also had top-25 finishes in sacks allowed (2nd), first downs (5th), scoring offense (7th), and rushing offense (25th).
Shephard's WR unit included standouts Rome Odunze and Jalen McMillan, who each earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors from one source or another. McMillan led the team in receptions, with 79 for 1,098 yards, while Odunze led the team with 1,145 yards, on 75 receptions โ each posting a season among the top-10 in UW history.
ย
Shephard came to Montlake after having spent the past five seasons at Purdue, including the last four as co-offensive coordinator.
ย
In 2021, Purdue went 9-4 and beat Tennessee in the Music City Bowl. The Boilermakers averaged 355.3 passing yards per game, good for fifth in the nation. With Shephard's guidance, Purdue wide receiver David Bell caught 93 passes for 1,286 yards, placing him second in the NCAA in receptions per game, and fifth in yards per game.
ย
Bell, who was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2019, earned first-team All-Big Ten for the second straight season, while teammate Milton Wright, who caught 57 passes for 782 yards, made honorable mention.
ย
In 2020, Bell led the Big Ten with in both receptions (53), receiving TDs (eight) and yards per game (104.2), while teammate Rondale Moore caught 35 passes for 270 yards over just three games.

Under Shephard's coaching, Bell earned the 2019 Big Ten Freshman of the Year one season after Moore had won that same honor โ just the fifth time in history that teammates had won that award in back-to-back seasons.
ย
As a freshman, Bell tied for the lead in the Big Ten with 86 receptions, good for 1,035 yards and seven touchdowns. He was recognized as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week a school-record-tying four times in 2019 (tying Moore in 2018). Moore, who was lost for the season in the first quarter of the fourth game of the year, still managed to catch 29 passes for 387 yards and two touchdowns for the year.
ย
In 2018, Moore, the Cardinal's second-round selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, led the nation with 114 receptions for 1,258 yards and 12 touchdowns. The recipient of the Paul Hornung Award as the nationโs most versatile player and the first true freshman consensus All-American in Big Ten history, Moore broke school records for all-purpose yards in a game (313 vs. Northwestern in his first collegiate game) and season (2,215). Seniors Isaac Zico and Terry Wright, also thrived in the Purdue offensive, finishing with a combined 74 receptions for 1,211 yards and 11 touchdowns.
ย
In his first season at Purdue, Anthony Mahoungou wrapped his collegiate career on a tear, finishing the final four games with 18 receptions for 366 yards and six touchdowns. Mahoungou caught the game-winning 38-yard touchdown pass with 1:44 remaining in the Foster Farms Bowl against Arizona. Gregory Phillips set the Purdue bowl-game record with 14 receptions.
ย
Shephard joined the Purdue coaching staff after spending the 2016 season at Washington State. In his lone season in Pullman, where Shephard served as the inside receivers coach, he coached star wideout River Cracraft, whose final college season was cut short due to injury but who still notched 53 receptions for 701 yards and five touchdowns in 10 games. Washington State averaged 370.8 passing yards per game during the regular season.
ย
Prior to working at WSU, Shephard spent four seasons at Western Kentucky. He joined the WKU staff in 2011 as a defensive analyst and volunteer assistant, a position he held for two seasons. He was moved to offensive analyst in 2013 before being hired full-time as the Hilltoppersโ receivers coach in 2014. In his two seasons, Hilltopper receivers amassed 553 receptions and 86 touchdowns. The offense averaged 374.3 passing yards per game in 2014 and 372.2 yards in 2015.
ย
Shephard got his start in football coaching in the Indiana high school ranks, serving as an assistant at his alma mater, Fort Wayne Northrop, in 2005 before moving to Broad Ripple in Indianapolis in 2006. He served as a volunteer assistant with the DePauw track & field program in 2007, working with the long jumpers and sprinters.
ย
A native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Shephard was a four-year football letterman at DePauw (2001-04). He was a two-time All-American and still holds the school record for career kickoff return yards (1,430), while ranking sixth in receptions (168), seventh in receiving yards (2,382) through the 2021 season.
ย
As a senior, Shephard caught 47 passes for 815 yards and seven touchdowns. He was one of only two Division III players to compete in the 2005 Hula Bowl. Shephard served as captain for both the football and track & field teams as a senior.
ย
Shephard served as an intern with the Philadelphia Eagles during his senior year at DePauw. He also worked in the NCAA Education Services Division in 2006 and 2007 and with the National Center for Drug-Free Sport in Kansas City, Missouri, from 2007 to 2011.
ย
Shephard earned a bachelorโs degree in sports medicine from DePauw in 2005 and his masterโs degree in recreation and sport administration from Western Kentucky in 2013. He and his wife, Hallie, have three children.
