He was named to the 2023 Jersey Mike's Naismith High School Trophy Preseason Watch List. He was a district MVP and graduated as his team's all-time leading scorer. Yates graduated Magna Cum Laude. He also reportedly received offers from Gonzaga, Baylor, Memphis and Auburn, among other schools.

Yates is the cousin of Washington Assistant Coach and former NBA player Quincy Pondexter. His father, Wesley, played college football at Texas Southern.
