3L Series |
The 3L (Listen, Learn, Lead) Series was developed in September 2021. Over the course of the academic year, the DEI department sponsors 4 foundational workshops (which are repeated twice over the year) facilitated by industry leaders. The components covered in each workshop are intentionally structured to ensure that all ICA staff and coaches have similar knowledge and understanding of key components of diversity, equity and inclusion. All ICA staff and coaches are expected to attend two sessions.
Year 1
- Session 1: Strong House = Strong Foundation
- Session 2: Intersectionality & Privilege
- Session 3: Brave Conversations
- Session 4: Ally, Advocate, Accomplice
- Session 1: LGBTQ+ Advocacy & Inclusion
- Session 2: How to Create a Culture of Anti-Racism
- Session 3: Bias & Microaggressions
- Session 4: Real World/Life Case Studies
- Session 1: Disability and Ableism
- Session 2: Land Acknowledgment at the University of Washington
- Session 3: Cultural Humility
- Session 4: Language and Effective Communication
- Session 1: Civic Engagement
- Session 2: Navigating Change & Uncertainty
- Session 3: Effective Communication with GenZ
- Session 4: Building Community & Building Trust
“I believe the 3L series is extremely important to continuing our collective efforts to make our department more equitable and inclusive. I found the sessions on Microaggressions & Bias and Real World/Life Case Studies to be most impactful. The ability to have uncomfortable conversations with my peers in a safe environment, led by our knowledgeable DEI staff has been enlightening and encouraging.”

McLendon Leadership Initiative
The McLendon Leadership Initiative seeks to provide aspiring sport administrators with career development opportunities through practical experiences, networking, and instilling the values of John McLendon: Integrity, Education, Leadership, and Mentorship. It has been launched through the McLendon Foundation as a coach supported program to create access to and opportunity for meaningful employment experiences for candidates - known as MLI Future Leaders - and enhancing their career options. Adidas has generously pledged to support this initiative at the University of Washington.
The McLendon Internship at the University of Washington has two primary goals: (1) to provide a collaborative, experiential, and project-based work experience within ICA, and (2) to provide opportunities to observe, network, and participate in the planning, meetings, activities, and strategy sessions of a Power 5 Athletic Department. The McLendon Intern will begin the program in the fall of 2024 and will work approximately 40 hours per week for each of the fall, winter, and spring academic quarters. Each quarter will expose the intern to a particular focus area within college athletics. Each quarter, the intern will primarily work within one unit, and engage in project-based work with other units within the focus area.

Husky Leadership Scholarship
The Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership M.Ed. program at the University of Washington’s College of Education offers a scholarship in coordination with the UW ICA (Athletics) Department. The ICA (Athletics) Department provides significant support to the IAL M.Ed. program and opportunities for our students each year. The goal of this scholarship is to recruit and support students seeking career preparation in athletic administration and sports coaching.
This scholarship funding provides an opportunity to recruit and support qualified applicants to the IAL program with direct tuition awards.
In addition to tuition support, this scholarship will:
(1) provide a collaborative, experiential, and project-based internship, and
(2) provide opportunities to observe, network, and participate in the planning, meetings, activities, and strategy sessions of a Power 5 Athletic Department.
