Taylor Van Zee has been a constant part of Washington's success during her career. Over the last four years, she has started all but three of a possible 222 games and has hit over .350 every season of her career. Van Zee has twice been named to the All-Pac-12 team already and was named All-Freshman in 2015. That same year, she was named one of the national finalists for NFCA Freshman of the Year. This season, she has set career highs in home runs and slugging percentage while hitting leadoff for the first time in her career. She also took home her first-ever Pac-12 Player of the Week award. Van Zee, who has been named to the Pac-12 All-Academic team every year she has been eligible, will graduate this May with a degree in speech and hearing science.
What are some of your favorite memories at UW?
Some of my favorite memories at UW have been spending time with my teammates on the road. The fall trip at the beginning of the year is my absolute favorite because we get to spend time with each other and play crazy games. I think we’re a pretty goofy group so we enjoy each other’s company and make the most out of our time together.
How have you grown while at UW?
While at Washington, I have learned the importance of relationships and leadership among a group of people. My teammates and coaches have taught me so much about what it means to work toward a common goal and I know that I’ll take all of these lessons with me as I start a new chapter in my life. I’ve been so lucky to be surrounded by this group of strong people day in and day out and they’ve definitely made me a better version of myself.
Do you have any message for the coaching staff and team?
Thank you. Because of this team culture and foundation, I have learned more than I ever thought I would. Coach Tarr and the entire staff strive to get better every day and every year, allowing individuals to grow and learn and ultimately be the best they can be. The standards here are high and we win because of the process - it's a special place.
What are your plans after graduating?
After I graduate with my Bachelors of Science in Speech and Hearing Sciences, I will be attending graduate school for speech language pathology at Loma Linda University. I am hanging up my cleats, but University of Washington Softball will forever be in my heart.
