BRADENTON, Fla. -- Washington men's golf will compete at the NCAA Championships, beginning Friday at The Concession Golf Club. The six-day tournament includes four rounds of stroke play with the top-eight teams advancing to match play that will be contested over the final two days of the tournament.
UW AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPSThe Dawgs will compete in the NCAA Championships for the 26th time. Their best-ever finish was third back in 2005 when James Lepp won the individual title. They also finished third in 2009 when match play then decided the title. Since the match play portion of the NCAA Finals began, the Dawgs are one of just six schools to advance at least three times. The Huskies played match play in 2009, 2010 and 2012, but have been eliminated in the quarterfinals each time. Lepp’s final round 63 led to his title in 2005, but the Dawgs have also had a pair of individual runner-ups. Nick Taylor placed second in 2008, while Troy Kelly was second in 1999. Overall, Washington has had seven top-10 finishers in the past 15 years, most recently Chris Williams in 2010 when he took ninth.
Washington will have three players with NCAA experience in the field this week, including Cheng-Tsung Pan who will be competing for the fourth time. His best finish was a tie for 29th back in 2012. Jonathan Sanders will be making his second appearance with his best finish a tie for 76th in 2013. Finally, Corey Pereira will be playing in his second NCAA Championships after last season being the Dawgs top finisher in a tie for 19th.
HUSKY LINEUP
Husky Coach Matt Thurmond made a slight change in the lineup this week, inserting sophomore Kevin Kwon in the fifth spot. The Huskies top four have all won individual tournaments during their Husky careers, led by Pan who has a Washington record eight. The senior is fresh off winning his second career Regional, this time at Gold Mountain. Corey Pereira earned his first win earlier this year at the Lamkin San Diego Classic when he tied Pan for medalist honors. Jonathan Sanders is in the third spot and is a two-time winner, including the 2014 NCAA Raleigh Regional. Freshman Frank Garber won his first collegiate tournament last month at the Redhawk Invitational at Chambers Bay, site of the 2015 U.S. Open. Kwon has not played in the Husky lineup since March, but was the Dawgs No. 2 player three times in the fall.
Four of the Huskies are recognized in the Golfstat individual rankings, led by Pan who is currently No. 3 and has been No. 1 at times this season. Pereira and Sanders are also inside the top-100 at No. 52 and No. 96, respectively. Garber is currently the system’s No. 236 player. Pan is also No. 3 in the Golfweek rankings, while Pereira is No. 45, Sanders is No. 83 and Garber is No. 188. Kwon carries a ranking of No. 565 by Golfweek, but has played in just five events this year.
