SEATTLE - The women's and men's javelin throws were held this evening on the Husky Outdoor Track infield, the first volleys in the annual UW-WSU Dual Meet that will pick up tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. The Cougars got the first two wins, but the Huskies beat the form chart on the men's side thanks to a big PR from freshman Denham Patricelli.
Patricelli, a freshman from Maple Valley, came in with a season-best of 203-7, but on his second attempt, he got the spear sailing to a mark of 212-feet, 6-inches, moving him up to second-place. Patricelli would also throw 211-0 on his fifth attempt. Junior Curtis Clauson had a throw of 208-0 on his first attempt which would be his best and stand up for third-place. WSU's Kyle Stevens got the win at 220-8, but the favorite coming in, Brad Stevens, settled for fourth at 200-6.
Patricelli moves from 43rd in the NCAA West Region standings coming into the day up to 29th.
The Cougars got the top two spots in the women's javelin, with Husky sophomore Ashley Alexander taking third-place with a best mark of 139-9. The day started in very unfortunate fashion for UW as freshman Lyndsay Leatherman suffered a leg injury on her first attempt and could not continue.
The Pac-12 Networks will be televising a two-hour portion of Saturday's action live from 1:30 p.m. to the meet's scheduled conclusion at 3:30 p.m.
