UW Men?s Crew Continues Season At Stanford, WSU

SEATTLE – After a dominant weekend to open the season, Washington Men’s Rowing will compete at the Stanford Invitational and take on in-state rival Washington State this Saturday, April 11.
UW men’s crew will send its first, second and third varsity eight boats and freshman eight to the Stanford Invitational, while the fourth varsity, second freshman eight and a freshman varsity combo will head to WSU.
“We are hoping to build through the season,” UW men’s rowing head coach Michael Callahan said. “With our full team racing on the road this weekend, this will be a good test for everyone.”
The four-time defending Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Champion Huskies began their season last weekend with a sweep at Brown, last year’s national champion runner-up.
The Stanford Invitational is divided into a morning and afternoon session, with the Huskies competing in dual races in the morning against Stanford and against Oregon State in the afternoon.
Stanford men’s crew began its season at the San Diego Crew Classic last weekend. The Cardinal took third in the varsity eight Grand Final. The second varsity eight finished fifth and the third varsity eight took first. Stanford took 13th at the IRA National Championships in 2014.
Oregon State beat Gonzaga in a dual race in Spokane, Wash., last weekend, sweeping the Bulldogs in the varsity, second varsity and third varsity eights, as well as the freshman eight. The Beavers placed 18th at last year’s IRA National Championships.
“Stanford is a very workman-like team which races very aggressively and we expect them to try and put us on our heels and we need to do a good job rising to their challenge,” Callahan said. “Oregon State has a strong walk-on culture with tough men from the Pacific Northwest, mainly homegrown Oregonians. We are excited to test ourselves with this double-header. This will certainly test our fitness and ability to repeat performance at a very high level.”
The WSU dual will be a chance for the remaining boats to compete against a high-quality crew, as the Cougars boast one of the best club teams in the nation.
“We are excited to send our team to Pullman to race WSU,” Callahan said. “Being able to travel and race effectively is an important and difficult skill, so we see this as a great opportunity to gain experience and improve. WSU has consistently been one of the fastest club teams in the country and will provide a good challenge for this group.”
Originally scheduled for Saturday, April 11, the WSU men’s dual has officially been rescheduled and will begin at 4 p.m. PT on Friday, April 10, due to projected weather conditions.
