History
Dempsey Indoor Center
Recently, the Dempsey Indoor Facility was retrofitted with energy-efficient LED lights. The Dempsey is the first UW Athletics facility to be upgraded to LED lighting and will be used as a model for future projects.
LED lights use about 50% less electricity than traditional incandescent, fluorescent or halogen lights. Because LED lighting mimics daylight and eliminates shadows and dark spots on a playing surface, it is quickly becoming the standard for athletic facilities.
Additional benefits include extending bulb life, durability, improved cold weather performance, controllability, elimination of infrared or ultraviolet radiation emissions, and the ability to turn on/off instantly, with no delays.
Student and Athlete-Led Initiatives
In 2018, UW Rowing used a Campus Sustainability Fund grant for a new all-electric launch, which replaced a gas-powered boat. The new outboard will prevent the burning of thousands of gallons of gasoline and significantly decrease the amount of CO2 that is produced from a traditional watercraft, in addition to supporting a local company and promoting sustainability within the rowing community. .
UW Solar, an interdisciplinary team of undergraduate, graduate and PhD students from various departments on campus, concluded their solar array feasibility study for Husky Stadium. The project provided façade system design options, costs, benefits and potential next steps. In addition to financial benefits, solar panels offer resilience to power shortages and outages, improve air quality and human health by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and represent environmental stewardship.
UW Athletics also supported the Program on the Environment and a group of students in the Environment 480 class whose academic project was a study of a bioswale site near the Conibear Shellhouse and Husky Ballpark, which would help keep contaminants out of Lake Washington by naturally filtering stormwater.
