Mascot Handlers
Who is Dubs?
Dubs is the 14th official live mascot of the University of Washington. He is an Alaskan Malamute from Snohomish, Washington. Born on January 4, 2018, he was adopted into a family of UW alumni and now resides in Sammamish, Washington. He has two human siblings and two furry siblings.
The University of Washington Intercollegiate Athletics Department is looking for current UW students to apply who are experienced in working with live animals, and have experience working with people of all ages at large and small-scale events.
Skill Requirements
- Highly motivated, creative self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills
- Positive leader and ambassador of the University of Washington
- Background and/or interest in dog behavior
- Ability to physically handle a large dog (including sprinting 100 yards)
- Willingness to learn and follow care and training protocols
- Organized and timely in responding to emails and scheduling requests
Expectations
- Accompany Dubs to athletic and community events
- Monitor crowds and environments for safety
- Manage Dubs’ schedule during appearances
- Recognize and respond to signs of stress
- Interact with fans in a friendly and knowledgeable manner
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- Public speaking
Commitment
- 1–2 events per week for a 12-month period (July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027)
- Attendance at all 2026 home football games
- Minimum of five training hours (in addition to events)
- Ability to balance academics with nights, weekends, holidays, and travel
