Pan Tied For 31st At U.S. Open

ARDMORE, Pa. -- Husky sophomore Cheng-Tsung Pan shot 5-over 75 in the third round of the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club Saturday and sits tied for 31st with the likes of Tiger Woods heading into Sunday's final round.
Pan, who just completed his sophomore season at Washington and earned 2013 PING first team recognition, has a three round total of 219 (+9). He is 10 strokes behind tournament leader Phil Mickelson, who is the only golfer in the field that is under par at -1.
Pan was one of four amateurs who made the cut. He sits second among them, trailing only California's Michael Kim, who is five strokes ahead of Pan.
The UW golfer needed to play 27 holes on Saturday after being unable to finish the last half of his round on Friday. Pan began the day tied for third and even par for the tournament and remained that way until he reached the toughest stretch of golf course. He would bogey 14 and 15, before double-bogeying 17 to record a 72.
He secured his spot for weekend play, four shots clear of the cutline.
Pan teed off in the afternoon for the third round and remained even until a bogey on No. 5. He added another bogey before scoring birdie on the short par-4 10th hole. That would be Pan's last birdie of the day.
He would double bogey No. 14 and bogey holes 15 and 17 to shoot 75.
Pan, who played in the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional, but missed the cut, is among eight players tied for 31st at +9. Among those also at 9 over are Woods, Matt Kuchar and Padraig Harrington.
Chris Williams missed the cut by one stroke at +9. It marks the end of Williams' amateur career, as he will turn pro in time for next week's Travelers Championship. Williams, the 2013 Ben Hogan Award winner, has spent the last 45 weeks as the No. 1 player in the World Amateur Rankings.
