In honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Husky student-athletes and staff volunteered at Friends of Youth. Volunteers painted and repaired facilities for a transitional housing complex that provides resources to young single mothers. The project was in partnership with the campus-wide Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.
Spring Break 2008
Seventeen student-athletes from the track and field team volunteered with Bryant Elementary school two days over spring break. They worked with the Physical Education teacher Ms.Weinman and volunteer coordinator Ann Marie Patterson to set up a mini-track meet for the K-3rd graders. During their PE class time, eight stations were set up on the outdoor field where the kids learned various track and field events: the "noodle" javelin, the frisbee discus throw, the shot put, sprinting start, hurdles, relay baton passes, etc. UW student-athletes ran each station and gave the kids instruction and pointers on how to do the event.

University of Washington students received a firsthand lesson in the importance of affordable homeownership today, as they watched a family begin building their own home on the UW campus with the help of Husky sports team coaches, including head men's football coach Tyrone Willingham and basketball coach Lorenzo Romar, UW athletes, students, and volunteers from Bank of America. Habitat for Humanity led the build along side Heidi Gerber and her daughter, Jessica, who will donate 500 hours of labor to help build their first home...click here for entire story.

Calvary Fellowship's 'Forum on Life and Basketball' is set for Friday night May 5th at the Calvary Fellowship Auditorium at 7:30 pm. Coach Lorenzo Romar will be the keynote speaker. Other participants will be Kayla Burt, Husky women's guard and V-Award winner, Husky men's players Jon Brockman and Ryan Appleby, and SPU women's MVP Amy Taylor doing music with the 'Brett Williams Band'. Spring 2006
The Washington men's and women's track team members are taking turns volunteering for Katherine's Place. The latest group of athletes--Brook Anderson, Travis Boyd, Araya Gobena, Jon Harding, Zach Middles and Alison Tubbs--spent an hour-and-half on Thursday, April 13 with kids, most of them refugees from Africa or HIV afflicted, reading and playing games. Members of the track and field team will be visiting with the children of Katherine's Place every Thursday throughout the Spring quarter.
Wednesday, March 1
As part of View Ridge Elementary's Reading Week, football players Michael Braunstein, Sean Douglas, Troy Perry, and Luke Kravitz read Dr. Seuss books to children at the Everett elementary school. The four Huskies volunteered two hours on March 1 reading their personal favorite Dr. Seuss book to the children. March 2 marks the birthday of Dr. Seuss, hence the theme. The program is trying to promote reading and show students that people outside of school enjoy reading too.
Winter 2006
The Washington women's gymnastics team and many of the Husky baseball players are busy this season making new friends with students at John Rogers Elementary School. The teams are part of a program that is connecting Huskies with the elementary school kids through pen pal correspondence. The program allows the Husky student-athletes to help students improve their reading and writing skills. This is the third year that the gymnastics team has participated in the program and the first year that the baseball team has jumped on board.
Monday, Feb. 13
Washington basketball players Brandon Roy, Mike Jensen, Justin Dentmon, Bobby Jones, and Zane Potter went to the Childern's Hospital to meet and entertain some patients. The guys hung out with the kids, talked about basketball and also participated in some paintings sessions.
Monday, Feb. 27
Washington Football Coach Tyrone Willingham will be meeting with a group of students from the Highline School District on February 27 on the UW campus. Willingham will be meeting with the group of 13-15 year olds to discuss the importance of setting goals, working hard, and the importance of education.
Saturday, Dec. 17
Amy Griffin, assistant women's soccer coach, spent the day volunteering at the Matt Talbot Center Family Christmas Party on Dec. 17. Also joining Griffin were football players Isaiah Stanback, Quintin Daniels, Johnie Kirton and Caesar Rayford. Besides carrolling with others, Griffin spent the day pumping up 60 basketballs, donated by June Daugherty's basketball camps. Griffin reports that every kid at the party was able to leave with a basketball!
Thursday, Dec. 8
The Children's Hospital was filled with magic and memories courtesy of the following athletic department representatives: Men's Tennis Coach Matt Anger, Assistant Coach Chris Russell, players Andy Gerst, Andy Kuharszky, Patrik Fischer, Alex Slovic, Daniel Chu, David Chu, Klaus Jank, Mike Ricks and baseball players Brian Bauer and Adrian Gomez. It was a quiet evening in the playroom, so most of the athletes made visits to patient rooms as well as the Cancer Care Alliance area. The group played games with the kids, painted with them and spread Husky goodwill throughout the evening.
Wednesday, Dec. 7
The entire men's basketball team (except the freshmen, who had a prior committment) and coaching staff visited Aki Kurose Middle School in Seattle on Dec. 7. The team and staff mingled with the kids and posed for pictures.
December
The women's tennis team went to University Village and picked four tags off the Christmas Tree and bought gifts for four different familes. The team did this in lieu of doing a "Secret Santa" gift exchange, which they had done within the last couple of years.
Tuesday, Dec. 6
The baseball team was represented by Brian Bauer, Matt Kasser, Brandon McKerney, Jason Erickson, Mike Burgher, Cory Rickard, Matt Hague, Curt Rindal, Nick Burnham and D.J. Neyens for a night of fun and play with children at the Children's Hospital. Bauer coordinated the evening and reports from the kids, parents and staff at Children's indicate it was a wonderfully successful evening. The Huskies brought many smiles to faces by participating in games, arts and crafts and spreading holiday cheer. Kristie Forrest, spokesperson and founder of "Paint a T with Me" said: "They created a magical evening for all involved, especially the kids. The University of Washington and the Department of Athletics could not ask for finer ambassadors. They honor all that proudly wear the Purple and the Gold!"
Friday, Oct. 28
The men's swimming team is volunteering at the Queen Anne Community Center Annual Halloween Carnival on Friday, October 28th from 5-9 p.m. They will help operate carnival booths that include games, face paint and will distribute prizes and decorate pumpkins.
