The Husky defense was outstanding in a 26-14 Pac-10 victory versus Arizona State.
Washington managed to sack Sun Devil quarterback Ryan Kealy nine times, hold ASU's running game to 51 yards and 231 yards of total offense to defeat the defending Pac-10 champions.
Washington used a powerful running game to control the clock and the game. Rashaan Shehee led the Huskies with 146 yards on 29 carries while his backup, Maurice Shaw, turned in 94 yards on 17 rushes.
Again, it was Jerome Pathon getting the Huskies started with a 17-yard touchdown reception from Brock Huard late in the first quarter. It was only the second touchdown pass completed against the Devils that season, and was the first time they had been scored on in the first quarter. The Sun Devils answered in the second quarter when they recovered a fumble on the Washington 19-yard line. J.R. Redmond carried the ball in from the three yards out after five plays to give the Devils a 7-6 lead.
Shaw gave the Huskies a 13-7 lead with 1:25 to go in the first half on a 28-yard TD run, but the Huskies were not done.
Nigel Burton picked off a Kealy pass on the first play of the ensuing drive and Shehee set up his own one-yard touchdown run with a 26-yard reception, to give the Huskies a 12-point lead at the midway point.
The Huskies gained 240 rushing yards against an ASU defense that entered the game allowing just 73.5 rushing yards per contest. Huard completed eight of 19 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns. He connected with Mike Reed for a 10-yard score to provide the final margin of victory.
Jerry Jensen led the Washington defensive charge with 13 tackles and two sacks.
