Mike Johnson enters his first season as an assistant coach with the Huskies.
Johnson graduated from Washington in 2003 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He served as a player, coach and president of the UW men's volleyball club from 1999-2003 and helped lead the men to a fifth place national finish in a field of 64 in the school's second year of competition. Johnson was the head coach of the UW women's volleyball club from 2003-04 and improved the team's national ranking from 31st to ninth in just one season.
Johnson was also the head coach of the women's 16 and under club team Hawaii Volleyball Academy in 2001.
"I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to join such an elite program here at my alma mater," said Johnson. "Jim and Leslie are both excellent teachers, and I hope to learn a lot from them. I plan to hit the ground running and will do my best to take Washington to the next level."
"Mike has some unique skills that will be of great use to our program and I expect him to make significant contributions in all areas but specifically in the areas of recruiting and our ability to track the performance of the team and each player individually," said head coach Jim McLaughlin.
"While Mike is relatively young and has not had a lot of coaching experience, he is an extremely enthusiastic, hard working young man who learns things very quickly. He will not only bring new ideas to the job, he will also bring a high level of energy to the program that will be of benefit to everyone involved with the team .I feel very fortunate that we were able to add a person like Mike to our staff and both Leslie Tuiasosopo and I look forward to working with him."
