Today was a holiday, Martin Luther King Jr. day to be exact, so classes were not in session. Instead of our normal 2-6 p.m. practices, we practiced from noon-4 p.m. We are just coming off of our first home meet, and our second of the season.
Our first meet was at UCLA, and was not quite the start we were looking for. The week following our first meet we worked very hard to prepare for our first appearance at home. In many cases we went back to basics and focused on little details that would improve our skills as a whole.
Friday night rolled around and the whole team was pumped and ready to go out on to our floor and have some fun. Our warm up went great, and everyone looked relaxed. As always in a home meet, we started on vault. We had a great start; everyone was very aggressive and looked very confident. Bars was another strong event in the meet.
When we got to beam, we struggled slightly. Some of our struggles were very uncharacteristic, and things that we can easily fix in practices. Our final event was floor, an event which is typically very strong for our team. Even with the disappointment from our performance on beam we keep our heads up and had a very strong performance on floor. The excitement within the team was very high as they announced the results from the meet. Our final team score was 193.000, which gave us the win over Utah State!
Today in practice we went back to the grind, and are continually trying to improve with each day. The outcome of Friday was very exciting for everyone on the team, but we all know that we are capable of things much greater. As the season progresses we expect to continually improve with each competition. The dedication and heart that this team displays daily is something that I am proud to be a part of, and I am so thankful to have the opportunity to experience such a family.
