NESHANIC STATION, N.J. - Washington's Jennifer Yang birdied two of the final three holes to complete a rally and beat Lee Lopez in the first round of match play at the 2012 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship on Wednesday.
Yang trailed by one hole through 15 at Neshanic Valley Golf Course, but birdied No.'s 16 and 18 to earn a 1 up decision over Lopez, who will be a senior at UCLA this fall.
Lopez was the No. 11 seed for match play, while Yang was the No. 54 seed.
Yang, who just completed her freshman season at UW, was 2 up through three holes before a bogey on No. 4 and a Lopez birdie on No. 6 squared the match. Yang would take a momentary lead on No. 9, but gave it back on 10 and 11 to the first team All-Pac-12 selection.
Lopez kept that one hole lead for five holes before Yang mounted her late comeback.
Yang will advance to play Gonzaga's T.J. Kliebphipat in the round of 32 on Thursday at 7:00 a.m. PT. Kliebphipat, who entered match play as the No. 43 seed, scored a 4&3 win over Gabriella Dominguez.
