Dy Hopes Third Time Is The Charm In NCAAs

SEATTLE - Every match now could be the final one in the illustrious UW career of senior Denise Dy, as she heads into the NCAA Singles Championships on Wednesday. Dy will try to embrace that challenge and extend her final Husky tournament as long as possible. The 64-player singles championships are hosted by Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Dy has endured an up and down senior season. In the fall, she made the semifinals of the ITA National Indoor Championships for the second time in her career, her third trip to the final four of a major tourney, most ever by a Husky. But a wrist injury hampered her throughout most of the spring and kept her from her usual win totals. Still, Dy's ranking remains 17th nationally, and a third All-America honor for singles is within reach if she can advance to the round of 16 or finish the year ranked in the top-20. She has now had a month away from match play to rest her wrist since the Huskies played their regular season finale, defeating Oregon on Apr. 22.
Despite her excellent success in the fall national tournaments, Dy is still looking for a breakthrough in the NCAA tourney. She lost in the first round as a sophomore and fell in the second round last season. Her first round opponent will be Marianne Jodoin of Fresno State, currently ranked No. 41 nationally. That match is set for Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. Pacific time.
One round will be played each day from Wednesday until the final on May 28.
