SEATTLE - For the third time in her career, senior Denise Dy has been selected to the NCAA Singles Championships, as the 64-player field was announced today on NCAA.com. Dy, twice an All-American in singles, will be headed to Athens, Georgia for the tourney, which begins on May 23.
Dy's third tournament appearance ties her with Dea Sumantri for third-most in school history. Kristina Kraszewski and Venise Chan each appeared in four NCAA Singles tourneys.
Despite suffering from a wrist injury that had her winless from the end of February until UW's final home match on April 22, Dy had earned so many quality wins in the fall and at the start of the dual season that she remain ranked in the Top-25 all season. Dy was ranked 23rd in the most recent national singles poll. She will not be among the top-16 seeds this year as she was the past two years.
Dy has wins over two of the top-16 seeds (No. 6 Jana Juricova of Cal and No. 9-16 Zsofi Susanyi of Cal) and has a total of six wins over tournament entries this season.
In her previous two NCAA tournament appearances, Dy lost in the first round as a sophomore and advanced to the second round last year, while also making the NCAA Doubles quarterfinals last year with Chan.
