WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Eight Huskies were recently named to the PAC-12 Women's Gymnastics All-Academic Teams. Announced by Commissioner Larry Scott, student-athletes with All-Academic recognition must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average, in addition to being either a starter or significant team contributor.
Named to the PAC-12 All-Academic First Team were senior Ruby Engreitz and junior Megan Whitney.
The team event specialist on the bars, Engreitz earned the Provost Academic Excellence Award at the WESPYs in 2011. In 2010 and 2011, Engretiz earned First-Team PAC-10 All-Academic recognition as well. With an impressive GPA of 3.72, the senior psychology major now adds to her academic excellence by recently being named to the PAC-12 All-Academic First Team for 2012.
On the Dean's List during her freshman campaign at the University of Utah, Whitney was named a NACGC/W Scholastic All-American, the Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athlete, and was recognized on the Athletic Director's honor roll. A psychology major as well, Whitney holds a 3.78 GPA.
Second-Team recognition was awarded to Aliza Vaccher. A standout freshman in 2011, the sophomore posted a 3.50 GPA and is currently undecided on her major. This is Vaccher's first All-Academic recognition.
Senior Hatsune Akaogi and juniors Amanda Cline, Lauren Rogers, and Phoebe Tham were given All-Academic Honorable Mention. This is Cline's second time being named to the Honorable Mention list. Additionally, Tham was named to the Second-Team All PAC-10 Academic team in 2011.
Head Coach Joanne Bowers notes, "These student athletes have done such a great job managing their academic careers along with competing at a very high level every week. We are so proud of them. They are very deserving of this award."
