Complete Academic All-America At-Large Teams
SEATTLE - Already an All-American for her skills on the court, senior Venise Chan is now an All-American for her work in the classroom as well, as Chan earned a place on the Capital One Academic All-America Women's At-Large Team, which encapsulates a wide range of sports including women's tennis.
Chan was named to the All-America Third Team. She was previously named to the Academic All-District First Team last month, which made her eligible for the All-America team. It's the first All-America honor of her career for academics. The Hong Kong native graduated this quarter with a cumulative 3.63 grade point average, majoring in business administration with a marketing focus.
The At-Large group includes the NCAA women's sports of Bowling, Crew, Fencing, Field Hockey, Golf, Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Rifle, Skiing, Swimming, Tennis, and Water Polo. Out of all those sports, only 45 women earn All-America honors in the University division. Qualification for the team required a 3.30 grade point average and status as a significant contributor. Only two other Pac-10 athletes made the team, Arizona State diver Elina Eggers and Stanford lacrosse player Sarah Flynn.
Chan will go down as one of the greatest players in Washington history. Her 101 career singles victories rank second all-time at UW and she will soon earn her singles and doubles All-America honors for 2010-11 from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. She finished the year ranked 17th nationally in singles, reaching the NCAA Round of 16, and finished ranked ninth in doubles with Denise Dy, advancing to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
She went an incredible 22-1 in dual singles matches this year, helping the Huskies to the second round of the NCAA Team Championships. She is a two-time Pac-10 All-Academic First Team member and an Arthur Ashe Junior Scholar.
