McElyea Into The Quarterfinals At Cal State Am

SAN FRANCISCO - Washington sophomore-to-be Cory McElyea advanced to the quarterfinals of the 100th Annual California State Amateur after beating Ben Doyle 1 up on Thursday in the Round of 16 at The Olympic Club.
McElyea's match was the only one that went all 18 holes, when the 15-year-old Doyle proved to be a formidable foe. The Husky was up 3 holes after 14, but Doyle fought back to make it interesting down the stretch. McElyea, from Santa Cruz, Calif., bogeyed No. 15 and Doyle birdied No. 17 to get within one. But on the the par-4 18th, McElyea parred and Doyle missed a difficult birdie chip to put the match out of reach.
Up next for McElyea is Kevin Wentworth, who won his match today 5 and 4. They are scheduled to start their quarterfinal match at 8:00 a.m. with the winner advancing to a 1:15 p.m. semifinal matchup.
